Yep, I’m a writer. Technically, I’m more of a “typer,”
because I don’t use a pen or pencil that much. It would be
odd though, to say that I’m a professional typist, because
my typing skills are horrendous. Let’s say, I’m a wordsmith.
Although, that doesn’t really cut it either. To me, a “wordsmith”
would be forging new words. I don’t do that. I go to great
lengths to use words that are already in existence and that are
generally accepted.
I guess you could say that I’m more like mRNA, combining
common amino acids into complex proteins, thousands of amino residues
long…
Again, that might not be technically accurate, and even if it was,
it would be pretty damn nerdy.
Let’s just say that I synthesize knowledge, research and
experience into sentences and paragraphs, in attempts to inform
and entertain readers.
Jeez, that’s pretty nerdy too.
I’ll sum it up by saying that my undergraduate degree is
in journalism, and I was “published” (and paid) years
before I ever took my first class.
Past and current clients include: Mountain
Biking (former associate editor, currently a monthly contributing
editor), MetroSports
Boston (cycling columnist for more than four years), Dirt
Rag, BIKE,
Men’s
Fitness (and somehow one
of the articles ended up on an adventure racing Web site), Active.com.
eHow.com, bmxstunts.com, Hooked
on the Outdoors, Gravity (no longer in print), RIDE
bmx, Bicycle
Friendly Berkeley Coalition Newsletter Benning’s Health
& Fitness Journal, Tufts Health Plan’s WELL!
Magazine (plus three years worth of corporate communications),
and the list goes
on.
I specialize in cycling articles (“how-to”s, bike &
gear reviews, training information, etc), but I can expand that
into many facets of outdoor adventure, travel, and sports. Plus,
I’m currently enrolled in a graduate master’s physician
assistant program, so my knowledge base is expanding to include
injury prevention and rehabilitation.
